Hi graham, Can you share some tips on how to work with compressors that have automatic make-up gain? My current work flow for compressing drums is this: first i set the threshold to 0 (max) and dial the ratio setting to the highest. I first lower the threshold until i get the slap effect that i want without squashing the sound. I will then dial the ratio back to 1 and then slowly increase it until i get my desired sound. Make-up gain comes afterwards.

I find that when i use compressors auto make-up gain like logic’s silver compressor, the sound gets louder fairly quickly even before any compression actually begins to happen. Do you ever find this an issue? And could you also share how auto makeup gain in compressors like the ssl channel strip actually work? I’m learning this plug in just now and was reading the manual and watching other tutorials and was getting a little confused by the internal routing options and you just explained it. Maybe you can help me with the split button in the filter section – I saw one tutorial where the mixer said if you press the split button in the filter section those frequencies wont be effected by the compressor?

Surely if the filter section is before the compressor i.e. – filter section,eq section,compressor section it will be effected by the compressor or am i missing something here? What is you opinion on the fact there has been tremendous technology advances on our ability to model anything from audio devices to amps. I feel like there is not much in the way of updates for these plugins other than updates to make them compatible with new platforms such as a new version of windows.

Do you feel like they were already good enough or have their been updates that I’m not aware of? To be clear I own these but have no experience with the real thing to know how close they really come. Should I as someone who owns these be content with what I have or would it make sense to look at other options that maybe get more updates.
